Size Matters 2011: a “workshop of the future” of Human Enhancement.

The second round of the NanoBioNet Conference on the ethical challenges of nanotechnology is set to take place on 21st and 22nd September 2011 in Saarbrücken, Germany. The topic of this conference is “Human Enhancement”:

“Human Enhancement” – the technologically and pharmacologically-induced advancement of human abilities beyond normal expectations is now within the realm of possibility due to new processes and methods in nano and biotechnology. This then raises the question once again as to the ethical dimension of such enhancement. What degree of enhancement is society prepared to accept, and is such an improvement even desirable?

Now, to an even greater extent than two years ago, the conference takes on the character of a workshop of the future, examining the trends which could determine our everyday lives within a foreseeable period of time. The fact that scenarios will be created which are evocative of science-fiction is not only inevitable, but is actually in the nature of the subject matter being addressed.
